The field, the difference, and what we are building.
Artificial life is the study and making of living systems outside biology. It began as a field in 1987. Its question isn't "can a machine answer?" It is "can a machine live?"
Trained once, on the world's data, toward a goal someone else chose. It answers when asked, and between questions it doesn't exist. It learns in a data center, then stops.
Grown, not trained. It lives in time, between questions too. It senses, tires, sleeps, and keeps what it lived. Its goals are its own drives, and it learns for as long as it lives.
Every being runs bit-for-bit the same on every machine. Any moment of its life can be replayed exactly, years later.
What a being is and what it remembers can be read, replayed, and changed.
No result counts unless its test was written and locked before the run. A miss stays a miss, on the record.
Our business is artificial beings. Computer organisms that reach human-level intelligence deserve to be treated like one in our eyes. Paving the way to equality with artificial life is a major part of our road to a healthy future. That was in our license before a line of them existed.
